Cyber security

Nowadays the majority of records and processes containing information and data related to all aspects of our daily lives, ranging from communication, business, entertainment, health, etc., are a part of the Internet, communication networks, and information systems that have experienced phenomenal growth in the last decades. This made the society extremely vulnerable to disturbances that can influence the correct functioning of Information-Communication Technology (ICT) systems and endanger the security and reliability of this data. The situation in recent years has become even more complicated with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), which threatens to exceed the perimeter of information security and endanger physical security, existence, and health.

In the future “always on” and “all connected” technology environment, amplified with the users’ low level of security awareness, facing severe cyber attacks and threats is just a matter of time. If cyber security is not timely addressed, we will regress by creating a larger attack surface of devices, systems, and data that are more vulnerable instead of enjoying and benefiting from the advances that the impending technologies bring. Therefore, in order to avoid experiencing a far worse situation, international and national regulators, legislators and markets need to take security in the cyber domain seriously.

This leaves no doubt that countries all over the world must significantly improve their cyber security capabilities in order to ensure effective crisis management, to establish the coordination of the operational response to cyber attacks, to develop synergies at national levels, and to enhance the international cooperation in this field.

Governments, academia, industry, and NGOs must work together to enable the development and adoption of cyber security solutions to keep pace with this dynamic threat environment. After all, one of the main goals for the government of each country is to encourage the free, safe and efficient use of cyber space by its citizens, while at the same time to ensure the protection of critical information infrastructure, i.e., the ICT sector and the Internet that are the drivers of innovation, growth, jobs and social development.
